The
Company was founded in 1934, under the corporate banner of Provident Insurance
Corporation, by well known Filipino entrepreneurs at that time that included
Jose de Leon Joven (majority owner of PASUDECO, then the biggest sugar
mill in Luzon); Rafael R. Alunan (who later became Secretary of Agriculture);
Placido L. Mapa (the first President of the Bank of the Philippine Islands),
Mario V. de los Santos (founder of the University of Manila), the Gonzalez
family of Pampanga and the Cojuangcos of Tarlac. The Company, one of the
first Filipino-owned insurance companies, began operations with only 10
employees at Regina Building in Escolta, then the financial center in
Manila.
Surviving through
World War II and the post war depression, the Company continued to grow
in the succeeding decades and was subsequently acquired by A. Soriano
Corporation in 1979. Since then, the Company expanded its operations eventually
ranking among the top ten non-life insurance companies in the country.
In 1995, Corporacion
Mapfre, Spain’s biggest insurance group and one of Europe’s
leading insurance companies, acquired Provident Insurance Corporation
from A. Soriano Corporation with Asian Bank as a partner. In the process,
the Company was renamed Mapfre Asian Insurance Corporation and consequently
became a member of Sistema Mapfre, an international financial network
with interests in insurance, reinsurance and fund management with extensive
operations in 39 countries in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
In December 2005,
the Company merged with Insular General Insurance Company, the non-life
arm of Insular Life Assurance Co., Ltd., the third largest and the pioneer
domestic life insurance company in the Philippines. This merger has made
the Company, now renamed Mapfre Insular Insurance Corporation, a financially
stronger company with assets amounting to 1.8 billion and an equity base
of 900 million.
Mapfre Insular is
75% owned by Corporacion Mapfre of Span and 25% by Insular Life Assurance
Co. Ltd., of the Philippines.
The controlling shareholder
of MIIC, Corporacion Mapfre, is a member of Sistema Mapfre, the largest
insurance conglomerate in Spain with revenues of over €10 billion
(about US$13 billion) and assets of over €20 billion (about US$26
billion) in 2004. It has over 3,000 branches in Spain and other countries
with over 18,000 employees and 45,000 agents worldwide. Sistema Mapfre

property development, and other related services in Spain and 36 other
countries. Corporacion Mapfre is currently rated AA by Standard and Poors.
